Biography

Dr Tanya (Tetyana) Lokot is a Lecturer at the School of Communications at DCU. Her research and writing focus on the interplay between technology, digital media, and civic actors in the context of augmented protest. She also writes about internet freedom, internet governance and digital advocacy in Ukraine and Russia.

Dr Lokot’s recent research project about the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine and augmented dissent focused on how protesters in a post-Soviet country understand and harness the affordances and limitations of digital technology to augment their tactics and protest outcomes. She is currently also interested in the role of civic activists and grassroots digital media initiatives in conflict escalation and conflict resolution in the context of the ongoing hybrid warfare between Ukraine and Russia.

Dr Lokot has worked as a journalist, non-profit consultant, and media trainer in Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia, and speaks fluent English, Russian, and Ukrainian. She received her PhD from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, USA. From 2004 to 2012 she was Assistant Professor and Head of New Media Sequence at Mohyla School of Journalism (National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Ukraine).
