Born in Cork City in 1968, and educated by the Christian Brothers at Sullivan’s Quay and later at UCC, BA 1990, MA 1992, and DCU, Ph.D. 1996, Gary Murphy is Associate Professor of Government and was Head of the School of Law and Government for six years until 2018. He is a former editor of Irish Political Studies, the leading journal of political science in Ireland published by Taylor and Francis and has just finished a three year stint 2009-2012 as President of the Political Studies Association of Ireland. Gary Murphy was awarded a prestigious Fulbright fellowship in 2011 and spent six months as visiting Professor of Politics in the Centre for European Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011-12. He is a world renowned expert on lobbying regulation in representative democracies and is the co-author of Regulating Lobbying: A Global Comparison (Manchester University Press, 2010) Murphy’s work on lobbying has been presented to the Government Reform Unit of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform in Ireland; the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee of the House of Commons in the UK; the Parliamentary Committee Examining Lobbying in the Czech Republic; The Council of Europe in Strasbourg; and has been cited extensively in reports to the Australian federal parliament and various Australian state parliaments. This work has been funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. As well as lobbying regulation he has written extensively on the politics of modern Ireland. Gary Murphy is a regular commentator in the Irish media on political affairs in Ireland and the US and was one of RTE’s main analysts of the recent 2012 US presidential election.
